I passed my first official evaluation
A passing score is great, but the details about what I did well and where I need to improve are priceless...
The semi-pro game I worked a few weekends ago was officially assessed.
I didn’t know I’d personally be evaluated. I thought it was just for the center.
But an eval came through for me too! I didn’t do too much different; I was focused, well-prepared and professional per usual.
Here are the details…
Evaluation scale & overall performance
This is provided with the evaluation. It’s basically a sliding scale that gives each game a degree of difficulty and a score based on that difficulty if you passed.
My score
The game’s degree of difficulty was deemed Medium and I scored an 8.1. So my overall performance was Good!
The good stuff
Now to the match details and real evaluation comments.
It’s nice to know I did well overall but if I want to improve, it’s about learning exactly what I did well and what I need to improve to get Very Good next time.
I mentioned this to a Regional referee who told me:
‘Just don’t think you need to get “Very Good.” That’s an extremely, extremely high standard to meet.’
Whatever. I want a Very Good anyway!
The games in this league are live streamed and posted on YouTube once they’re done. That means I was able to tune in and actually rewatch the incidents where I performed well and needed improvement. Super helpful.
The good news is I know I’m continuing to improve as I gain more experience.
My favorite comments:
“You should continue to work games at this level in order to advance as a referee and improve your skills. This was a very solid performance by someone at your experience level.”
