Another takeaway after convos with some advanced referees.
“There’s a difference between vulgar words and offensive words. Just saying “f***”? Nah. “Oh f*** off”? Put it through the normal filter for dissent. Public provocative persistent personal. I can see tons of situations where YC-Dissent is clearly warranted for that.”
Some words, like racial slurs, should simply just not be allowed and met with an immediate sending off.
But there are plenty of swear words that, when used in general terms, aren’t that volatile when used in the right context and situations.
It’s when these words are used in personal attacks or a persistent fashion when they become dangerous and cautionable.
Note: In my opinion, it’s definitely OK to come down harder with warnings when vulgar language is used at lower ages. Best to help them cut that out completely and learn how to carry themselves on the pitch.
Takeaway: Vulgar words can be commonplace, especially in adult games. It’s when they cross the line into offensive territory when you have to clamp down hard on them.
